As early as the 1850's, during the infancy of Dallas, The Cedars, just south of downtown, emerged as its first and grandest suburb. It was based on the European concept of living close to your work, and it was an eclectic mix of elegant Queen Ann houses upon cedar-lined streets — built within walking distance of textile mills, garment makers and candy factories. It is now home to an eclectic mix of residential lofts, businesses and artists' studios.
Over the past several years, The Cedars has transformed into Dallas' newest art district featuring some of Texas' most renowned artists specializing in glass, ceramics, jewelry, photography, sculpture, drawings, painting, wood, stone, metal, blacksmithing, textiles and multi-media.
